Swans are a fairly common sight on the Canal - in 2016 there was even a family nesting near Farnhill Hall that included fours cygnets and a Canada goose ! In 1892, however, the appearance of a swan was a news-worthy event; there was even a reward for its capture and return. A Strange Visitor - On Wednesday morning the appearance of a large swan swimming leisurely about in the canal attracted no small amount of attention. As no such birds are kept in the immediate vicinity, the villagers were at a loss as to the probable owner. After floating about for a couple of hours, it was picked up by Mr. Samuel Murgatroyd. It however transpired that the owner (Mr. Mattock of Skipton) had been informed of its whereabouts, and one of his employees was sent to "bring back the wanderer." During the evening a promise of reward was made to the capturer. (Craven Herald - 21/10/1892)
